The Icarus design came along almost by accident,
if you believe in accidents.
Pictured here is a rack in our studio. The Icarus
shapes are the one on the left and the one in the middle.
I drew the shape very quickly while talking to someone
on the phone, and it bugged me for weeks. I finally built a prototype out
of walnut, and realized that it was probably the most comfortable guitar
I had ever strapped on and stood up with.
Yeah, it's a little modern, or even outside. But
it really works well as a gigging guitar.
The Icarus on the left has a top and back of lacewood
and a middle laminated core of mahogany. It is very lightweight, but hangs
nicely with a strap. It has three EMGs of various size and output.
The one in the middle has a bookmatched walnut crotch
top and a walnut chambered back with a core of quartersawn curly maple.
It has three familiar pickups that can blend to give you lots of new sounds
reminiscent of older ones.
The Icarus (so named with due respect to Matisse's
Jazz series of cutouts) body shape is not for everyone. But if you play
out a lot, you might really like it. I am thinking of getting an endorsement
from an orthopedist friend of mine.
